This talk will examine the important challenges and interesting research opportunities entailed by placing PR within the human-interaction framework; namely: a) taking direct advantage of the feedback information provided by the user in each interaction step to improve raw performance; b) acknowledging the inherent multimodality of interaction to improve overall system behaviour and usability and c) using the feedback-derived data to adaptively tune the system to the user behaviour and the specific task considered.
Some application examples where these concepts are currently being applied will be discussed, including Relevance-based Image Retrieval and Computer-Assited Transcription of Text Images.
These ideas and applications constitute the focus of a Spanish "Consolider Ingenio 2010" research programa called "Multimodal Interaction in Pattern Recognition and Computer Vision" (MIPRCV: http://miprcv.iti.upv.es).
Enrique Vidal is a full professor of computer science in the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and co-leader of the Pattern Recognition and Human Language Tecnology (PRHLT) research group of the Instituto Tecnológico de Informática, were he has coordinated many Pattern Recognition and and Machine Translation projects. He has published more than two hundred research papers in the fields of Pattern Recognition and applications to language, speech and image processing. Prof. Vidal has coordinated and/or participated in several successful European projects on Speech Recognition, Machine Translation and Computer-Assisted Translation. Currently he is the main coordinator of the "Consolider Ingenio 2010" research program called "Multimodal Interaction in Pattern Recognition and Computer Vision" (MIPRCV).
